Design concept

Putting a roof over an outdoor kitchen changes how often it gets used. Shade in July, shelter in a September shower, a warm spot under heaters in October. For many of our clients, the covered kitchen ends up being the most used room of the house from spring to fall.

It also changes the engineering. A pavilion has to carry snow, resist wind and sit on proper footings. Cooking under a roof needs a correctly sized vent hood, and the ceiling, lights and heaters all have to be planned around heat and grease.

We design the structure and the kitchen together, so beams do not land where the hood needs to go and posts do not block the view you built it for.

What is included

Covered outdoor kitchens by Lintel

  • Pavilions

Fully roofed timber, steel or hybrid structures designed for Ontario snow and wind.

  • Pergolas

Open or louvred pergolas for filtered shade, with optional retractable or fixed covers.

  • Vent hoods

Outdoor-rated hoods sized to the grill, ducted so smoke and grease leave the structure.

  • Heat and comfort

Infrared heaters, ceiling fans and privacy screens for longer evenings.

  • Lighting and power

Task lighting over cooking areas, dimmable ambient light and outlets planned into the structure.

  • Footings and permits

Structural footings below frost and the drawings needed for permits where they apply.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Covered structures often need a permit

Roofed structures over a certain size, and anything with gas or electrical, commonly need permits or inspections in GTA municipalities. Requirements vary, so we confirm them during design.

  • Grease and smoke have to go somewhere

Without a proper hood, a covered ceiling stains within a season. We size the hood to the grill's output and give it a clear path to exhaust.

FAQ

Covered outdoor kitchens: common questions

Pavilion or pergola: which is better for an outdoor kitchen?

A pavilion gives full protection from rain and sun and is the better choice if you cook in all weather. A pergola gives lighter, filtered shade and keeps the space open. Louvred pergolas sit in between.

Do I need a permit for a covered outdoor kitchen?

Often, yes, especially for larger roofed structures or anything with gas and electrical. Each municipality sets its own thresholds. We check with yours and prepare the drawings.

Can I use a grill under a roof?

Yes, with the right setup. That means a grill rated for it, clearances to the ceiling and a properly sized outdoor vent hood. We plan all three together.

Will a pavilion hold up to snow?

It has to. We design the roof and structure for the snow loads that apply to your location and make sure snow sliding off the roof does not land on walkways or seating.
