Design concept

In Ontario, a fire feature is often the difference between an outdoor space you use in July and one you use into November. It anchors the seating, gives people a reason to stay, and pairs naturally with an outdoor kitchen.

We build masonry fireplaces, gas fire tables, linear fireplaces set into pavilion walls and sunken fire pits. Each one starts with the same questions: wood or gas, how close to the house and trees, which way the wind blows, and where the seating goes.

Masonry fireplaces are structures in their own right. They need real footings and chimney heights that carry smoke above where people sit. Gas features are lighter but still need a properly sized line and safe clearances.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Local rules on open burning

Many municipalities regulate wood burning outdoors, and rules differ across the GTA. Gas features are generally simpler. We check what applies at your address before recommending wood.

  • Clearances protect the house

Distance to walls, roof overhangs, trees and fences matters for any fire feature. We follow the manufacturer's clearances and keep wood-burning features well away from structures.

FAQ

Outdoor fireplaces and fire features: common questions

Is a gas or wood-burning outdoor fireplace better?

Gas lights instantly, shuts off cleanly and is easier to live with, especially under a roof. Wood gives the crackle and smell but needs storage, ash cleanup and more clearance. Local rules can also limit wood burning.

Can an outdoor fireplace go under a pavilion?

Gas fireplaces rated for covered outdoor use often can, with the right clearances. Wood-burning fireplaces under a roof need a carefully designed chimney and more caution.

Do fire tables put out real heat?

They put out enough to take the edge off a cool evening for the people sitting around them. For a covered space, we usually pair a fire feature with overhead heaters.
