Heated floors are the most requested add-on in the bathrooms we build, and for good reason. Tile and stone feel cold most of the year in Ontario. A thin electric heating mat or cable under the tile changes that, and it makes the whole room feel warmer without cranking the furnace.
Electric systems are the usual choice for bathrooms. They sit in a thin layer of mortar or a membrane under the tile, run on a dedicated circuit, and are controlled by a programmable thermostat with a sensor in the floor. Set it to warm up before you wake up and switch off after you leave.
The part that matters most happens before tile. We test the cable at every stage of installation, because a heating cable damaged under tile cannot be repaired without lifting the floor.

Before you build
What to plan for
Electrical circuit
Floor heat needs its own protected circuit. A licensed electrician installs it, and we check the panel has room before the price is set.
Insulation below
Over an unheated garage or crawl space, insulation under the subfloor makes the heat far more effective and cheaper to run.
Not a whole-house heat source
In most bathrooms floor heat is for comfort. In a small room it can be enough on its own, but we plan it alongside the existing heating, not instead of it.
FAQ
Heated bathroom floors: common questions
How much does it cost to run a heated bathroom floor?
Running costs depend on the room size, the insulation below and how long the floor is on each day. On a schedule that covers mornings and evenings in a typical bathroom, most clients find it a small addition to their hydro bill.
Can heated floors go under any tile?
Porcelain, ceramic and most natural stone work well. Some engineered and vinyl products also allow floor heat, but only within the manufacturer's temperature limits, so we check the product before installing.
Can you add heated floors to an existing bathroom?
Only by removing the existing tile, because the heating goes underneath it. If you are retiling anyway, it is the right time to add it.
