A steam shower is a regular shower with a generator that fills a sealed enclosure with steam. It is one of the most requested upgrades in the bathrooms we design, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Steam finds every gap. If the enclosure is not sealed and the walls behind the tile are not vapour-proof, moisture ends up inside the framing.
The enclosure needs glass that reaches the ceiling, a door with a proper seal, and a ceiling sloped so condensation runs down the walls instead of dripping on your head. The generator needs a spot within a set distance of the shower, usually a vanity cabinet, closet or the basement, with access for service.
We plan the generator, the electrical circuit, the steam head location and the controls together, then waterproof the whole enclosure as a vapour-tight system before tile.

Full-height glass and a sealed door, or a transom that closes, to keep steam in.

Sloped ceilings
A slight slope so condensation runs to the walls instead of dripping.
Generator and controls
Generator sized to the enclosure volume, placed for service, with in-shower and outside controls.
Seating
A built-in bench, because nobody stands in a steam room for fifteen minutes.
Electrical
A dedicated circuit for the generator, installed by a licensed electrician.

What to plan for
Enclosure size
Bigger enclosures need bigger generators and take longer to fill with steam. Tile and stone also absorb heat, so the material choice affects sizing.
Generator location
Manufacturers limit how far the generator can sit from the steam head. We pick the spot during design so it does not end up in a closet you wanted for something else.
Electrical capacity
A steam generator draws a lot of power. Older panels sometimes need an upgrade, and we check that before the price is set.
FAQ
Steam showers: common questions
Can I turn my existing shower into a steam shower?
Sometimes. The walls usually have to be opened to add vapour-proof waterproofing, the glass has to reach the ceiling, and the ceiling may need to be lowered or sloped. In many cases it is close to a full shower rebuild.
Does a steam shower need a special fan?
The enclosure itself is sealed while the steam runs, but the bathroom needs a strong, properly vented fan to clear moisture when the door opens. Some clients add a small fan inside the enclosure to clear it faster after use.
How much power does a steam shower use?
Generators usually need a dedicated circuit, and larger units draw more. Each session is short, so running costs are modest, but the panel has to have room for the circuit. We confirm that during design.
