Custom kitchen islands in Toronto and the GTA

The island ends up being where homework, prep and every conversation happens, so it has to earn its spot.

Design concept

Everyone wants an island. Not every kitchen has room for the one they picture. The space around the island matters as much as the island itself, and too tight an aisle makes the whole kitchen worse to use.

We start with clearances. You need room to open the dishwasher, pull out a drawer and walk behind someone sitting on a stool. Once that works, we decide what the island does: prep, cleanup, cooking, seating, or a mix.

Then we design it as a piece of furniture, with stone that wraps the ends if you want it, storage on the working side and a comfortable overhang where people sit.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Cooktops in islands need venting

A cooktop on an island needs a ceiling hood or downdraft with a real exhaust path. We plan the duct route before committing to the layout.

  • Slab size limits length

Very long islands may need a seam. We check slab sizes for the stone you like and plan seam locations so they are discreet.

FAQ

Custom kitchen islands: common questions

How much space do I need around a kitchen island?

Enough to open appliances and walk past someone working. As a general guide we aim for a comfortable working aisle on the cooking side and a bit more where people pass behind seating, then confirm it against your appliances and how many cooks you have.

Can you add an island to my existing kitchen?

Sometimes. It depends on room size and whether plumbing or power can reach the floor where the island goes. We check this on the site visit.

Should my island have a sink or a cooktop?

A prep or cleanup sink is the more common choice and keeps mess off the seating side. A cooktop works well if ventilation can be done properly. We walk through both during design.
