Design concept

The difference between a waterfall that looks natural and one that looks like a pile of rocks is mostly in the stone setting. Real water finds the lowest point, carves a channel and spills over a lip. We set stone the same way, with a clear spillway, varied drops and plants softening the edges, so the water has somewhere believable to go.

A waterfall can feed a pond, end in a hidden basin under gravel, or run as a short stream across a slope. The hidden basin version suits families with small children because there is no open water at the bottom.

What is included

Backyard waterfalls by Lintel

  • Stone selection and setting

Local-looking stone set in layers with a defined spillway.

  • Streams and cascades

Single drops, stepped cascades or a winding stream across a slope.

  • Pondless option

Water collects in a buried reservoir, so there is no open pool.

  • Quiet pumps

Pumps sized for the flow you want, set in an accessible vault.

  • Lighting

Subtle underwater and uplighting for evenings on the patio.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Flow and sound

More water is not always better. We match pump output to the width of the spillway so the falls sound full without roaring.

  • Leaks at the edges

Most waterfall leaks happen where the liner meets the stone. We build the edges up so water cannot wick over the liner and disappear.

  • Winter

Running water over ice in deep winter can form ice dams that push water out. We usually shut waterfalls down for the season and restart in spring.

FAQ

Backyard waterfalls: common questions

What is a pondless waterfall?

It is a waterfall that drains into a buried reservoir filled with stone instead of an open pond. You get the sound and movement with no standing water at the surface.

How much maintenance does a backyard waterfall need?

Mostly seasonal: clearing leaves, cleaning filters and the fall shutdown. A well-built waterfall needs little attention during the summer.

Can a waterfall be added to an existing pond?

Usually. We look at the pond's liner, filtration and pump first, since a waterfall changes how much water needs to move.
