Design concept

A reflecting pool is the quietest water feature there is, and the least forgiving to build. The surface only reads as a mirror if it is perfectly level, the edges are crisp and the water is dark and clear. A few millimetres of difference along an edge shows immediately.

We design reflecting pools around what they are meant to reflect: a facade, a line of trees, the evening sky. Placement and depth are set in the 3D design so you can see the reflection from the angles that matter, whether that is the front walk or the kitchen window.

What is included

Reflecting pools by Lintel

  • Precise levelling

Edges set dead level so the surface reads as a single plane.

  • Concealed overflow

Hidden weirs and drains so the water sits right at the edge with no visible plumbing.

  • Dark finishes

Basin finishes chosen to deepen the reflection.

  • Filtration

Discreet circulation and filtration that keeps water clear without disturbing the surface.

  • Coping and surrounds

Stone or porcelain coping that frames the water cleanly.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Freeze and thaw

Shallow pools still freeze. We design the basin and drainage so the pool can be lowered or drained for winter without damage.

  • Debris

Still water shows every leaf. We look at nearby trees and plan for skimming or a seasonal cover where needed.

  • Safety

Most reflecting pools are shallow, but we still discuss edges, depth and access, especially near entries and play areas.

FAQ

Reflecting pools: common questions

How deep is a reflecting pool?

Usually shallow. The mirror effect comes from a dark basin and still water, not depth. We set depth based on the design and how it will be maintained.

Can a reflecting pool have a fountain in it?

Yes, though any jet or spill breaks the reflection. Many clients add a small, low feature they can switch off when they want a still surface.

Do reflecting pools get algae?

Without circulation they can. We include filtration sized for the volume and finishes that are easy to clean.
