Design concept

A pond is part water feature, part garden. The ones that work are planned around sun, shade, grade and where leaves fall. The ones that do not turn green by July. We start by looking at where water would naturally sit on your property, then design the shape, depth and edges so the pond feels settled into the landscape rather than dropped into it.

We build with a durable liner or underlayment system, natural stone edges and a filtration setup sized for the volume of water. Planting shelves give marginal plants a place to grow, and those plants do a lot of the work keeping water clear.

If you want fish, we design for it from the beginning, with enough depth for them to overwinter and circulation to keep oxygen up.

What is included

Backyard ponds by Lintel

  • Siting and layout

Placed for light, views and drainage, and away from tree roots where possible.

  • Liner and edges

A protected liner with natural stone edges that hide it completely.

  • Filtration

Skimmer and biological filtration sized for the pond, not guessed.

  • Planting shelves

Shallow ledges for plants that shade the water and absorb nutrients.

  • Fish-ready depth

A deeper zone so fish can survive the winter under the ice.

Before you build

What to plan for

  • Leaves and debris

A pond under a large tree fills with leaves every fall. A skimmer and a net over the pond in October save hours of cleaning.

  • Near creeks and wetlands

Properties near watercourses can fall under conservation authority regulation. We check before design so the location is approvable.

  • Child safety

Shallow edges, gentle slopes and, where needed, fencing or covers. We talk this through early if young children use the yard.

FAQ

Backyard ponds: common questions

How deep should a backyard pond be in Ontario?

If you plan to keep fish through winter, part of the pond needs to be deep enough that it does not freeze solid. We design a deeper zone for that, with shallower shelves for plants.

How do you keep pond water clear?

Balanced filtration, enough plants and not too many fish. Most green water comes from too much sun and too many nutrients, which good design controls.

Do ponds attract mosquitoes?

Moving, circulated water is not a good place for mosquitoes to breed, and fish eat larvae. A properly running pond is rarely a problem.

Can you build a pond on a sloped yard?

Yes. Slopes often make the best ponds, because the grade can feed a stream or waterfall into the main pool.
