Design concept

Water expands as it freezes, and a fountain left with water in a bowl or a line through an Ontario winter can crack by spring. Winterizing is not complicated, but it has to be done completely and on time, before the first stretch of hard freezing nights.

Our crew drains every bowl and basin, removes and stores pumps, blows out buried lines, cleans the basin and covers the fountain with a breathable cover that stays put in the wind. For ponds with fish, we leave the water in and set up an opening in the ice instead.

Clients on our Fountain Care plan are booked automatically each fall and spring, with reminders before each visit.

What to plan for

  • Timing

In most of the GTA we winterize from late October to mid November, before sustained freezing. Properties north of the city usually need to go earlier.

  • Tiered fountains

Multi-tier fountains hide water in places that are easy to miss. We check each tier by hand.

  • Fish ponds

Ponds with fish are not drained. They need a small opening in the ice for gas exchange, which we set up with a de-icer or aerator.

FAQ

Fountain winterizing: common questions

When should I winterize my fountain in Toronto?

Before the first run of nights well below freezing, usually late October to mid November. Earlier north of the city.

Can I leave my fountain pump in over winter?

It is not recommended. Pumps left in standing water can crack or fail. We remove, clean and store them.

Do you winterize ponds as well as fountains?

Yes. Ponds without fish can be lowered and shut down. Ponds with fish stay full, and we keep an opening in the ice.

How do I book seasonal winterizing every year?

Join our Fountain Care plan. Fall winterizing and spring opening are scheduled automatically, with reminders before each visit.
